Aeschylus
Aeschylus
Aeschylus was an ancient Greek playwright born around 525 BCE, often hailed as the father of tragedy. He is one of the earliest dramatists whose work has survived, and his innovations helped shape the structure of Greek tragedy by adding a second actor, thus creating dramatic dialogue. Aeschylus’s plays frequently explore themes of justice, fate, and the relationship between humans and the gods.
Throughout his life, Aeschylus was celebrated for his poetic grandeur and profound philosophical insights. His most famous works include the Oresteia trilogy, which examines the cycle of vengeance and the evolution of justice in human society. He fought as a soldier in significant battles such as Marathon, and his experiences often influenced the moral and ethical depth of his dramas.
One of Aeschylus’s famous quotes is, "Even in our sleep, pain which cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart, and in our own despite, against our will, comes wisdom to us by the awful grace of God." Another well-known line is, "Wisdom comes alone through suffering." These powerful quotes reflect his deep understanding of human suffering, fate, and the pursuit of knowledge through adversity.
