Bodhidharma

Bodhidharma was a legendary Buddhist monk and meditation master traditionally credited as the founder of Zen Buddhism in China. Believed to have lived during the 5th or 6th century CE, Bodhidharma is said to have traveled from India to China to spread the teachings of Mahayana Buddhism. His emphasis on meditation and direct experience over scholarly study profoundly influenced the development of Zen practice.

According to tradition, Bodhidharma taught the importance of zazen (seated meditation) as a path to enlightenment, encouraging practitioners to look inward and realize their own Buddha nature. He is also associated with the Shaolin Temple, where he is believed to have introduced physical training exercises that later evolved into martial arts. While much about his life is shrouded in legend, Bodhidharma’s impact on Buddhist thought and practice remains deeply significant.

One of Bodhidharma’s famous quotes is, "The mind is the root from which all things grow if you can understand the mind, everything else is included." This reflects his focus on inner awareness as the foundation of spiritual awakening. Another well-known saying is, "To find a Buddha, look within yourself." These quotes highlight his teaching that enlightenment comes through direct personal insight rather than external rituals or texts.
