Vinoba Bhave
Acharya Vinoba Bhave (1895–1982) was a prominent Indian philosopher, social reformer, and a close disciple of Mahatma Gandhi. Born as Vinayak Narahari Bhave in Gagode, Maharashtra, he abandoned his formal education in 1916 to join Gandhi’s Sabarmati Ashram. Influenced by Gandhi’s principles, Bhave dedicated his life to non-violence, social justice, and spiritual upliftment. He played a significant role in the Indian independence movement and later focused on rural development and social reforms. Bhave was honored with the Bharat Ratna posthumously in 1983 for his contributions to the nation. +9+9Free Press Journal+9PW Live
In 1951, Bhave initiated the Bhoodan Movement (Land Gift Movement) in Pochampally, Telangana, urging landowners to voluntarily donate a portion of their land to the landless. This movement aimed to address land inequality and promote social harmony through voluntary action. It later evolved into the Gramdan Movement, where entire villages pledged to surrender their land for collective ownership. Bhave's efforts in these movements were instrumental in promoting the ideals of Sarvodaya (welfare for all) and Gram Swarajya (village self-rule).
