Joaquim Barbosa
Joaquim Barbosa is a Brazilian author, jurist, and former Chief Justice of the Supreme Federal Court of Brazil (STF). Born in Paracatu, Minas Gerais in 1954, he rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most respected figures in Brazilian law. After studying law at the University of Brasília, he earned advanced degrees in France and later served in various legal and academic roles before being appointed to the Supreme Court in 2003 by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
As an author, Barbosa has published scholarly works on constitutional law, human rights, and social justice. His contributions to legal literature and public discourse reflect his commitment to equality and democratic principles. He became especially well-known for his role in the Mensalão corruption trial, where his leadership demonstrated independence and courage in addressing political corruption at the highest levels of government.
Reflecting his principles, Barbosa once remarked: “The law must serve justice, not power.” He has also said: “Equality is not a privilege—it is the foundation of democracy.” These quotes highlight his dedication to justice, fairness, and integrity, values that have defined both his judicial career and his authorship.
