Howard Nemerov, born on March 1, 1920, in New York City, was a distinguished American poet, novelist, critic, and educator. He served as a pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II and later earned a bachelor's degree from Harvard University. Nemerov held academic positions at Hamilton College, Bennington College, Brandeis University, and Washington University in St. Louis, where he was the Edward Mallinckrodt Distinguished University Professor of English from 1969 until his death in 1991. He was appointed Poet Laureate of the United States from 1988 to 1990 and served as Poetry Consultant to the Library of Congress in 1963–1964.
