Emily Mortimer is a British-American actress and filmmaker, born on October 6, 1971, in Hammersmith, London. She is the daughter of renowned writer and barrister Sir John Mortimer. Educated at St. Paul's Girls' School in London, Mortimer furthered her studies at Lincoln College, Oxford, majoring in English Literature and Russian, and spent a year at the Moscow Arts Theater Drama School. Her acting career began in stage productions, and she gained prominence with roles in films such as Shutter Island, Lars and the Real Girl, and Match Point. Mortimer is also known for her portrayal of Mackenzie McHale in the HBO series The Newsroom .
