Yasmine Hamdan

Yasmine Hamdan is a Lebanese singer, songwriter, and actress renowned for her innovative fusion of traditional Arabic music with contemporary electronic and indie styles. Born in 1976 in Beirut, Hamdan's early life was marked by the upheaval of Lebanon's civil war, leading her family to relocate to various countries, including Kuwait, Abu Dhabi, Greece, and France. This nomadic upbringing profoundly influenced her music, allowing her to blend diverse cultural elements into her sound. In 1997, she co-founded Soapkills, one of the first independent electronic bands in the Middle East, which played a pivotal role in shaping the region's underground music scene.

After relocating to Paris, Hamdan continued to evolve her musical career. She collaborated with artists such as CocoRosie and Mirwais Ahmadzaï, the latter of whom co-produced her album Arabology under the moniker Y.A.S. in 2008. Her debut solo album, Ya Nass (2013), showcased her ability to blend pop, folk, and electronic elements with melodies and lyrics inspired by various Middle Eastern traditions. The album was well-received internationally and highlighted her unique approach to music.

Hamdan's music often delves into themes of identity, exile, and cultural fusion. She has stated, "I sing in Arabic as a statement. It's art, and it's a challenge. It's interesting to be at once an insider and outsider." This reflects her commitment to using music as a medium for personal and political expression.
