Tu Youyou

Tu Youyou is a distinguished Chinese scientist and phytochemist, renowned for her groundbreaking discovery of artemisinin, a potent antimalarial compound. Born on December 30, 1930, in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, Tu pursued her education at the Peking University School of Medicine, graduating in 1955. She then embarked on a career at the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, where she led research initiatives combining traditional Chinese medicine with modern scientific methods. Her most notable achievement came in the early 1970s when she identified artemisinin, derived from the plant Artemisia annua, as an effective treatment for malaria.
