Tsai Ing-wen

Tsai Ing-wen is the first female president of Taiwan, having taken office in 2016. Born in Taipei, Taiwan, in 1956, Tsai is a prominent political figure and a member of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). She earned degrees from Cornell University Law School and London School of Economics, and before entering politics, she worked in international trade and law. Tsai’s career in politics began when she became a member of Taiwan’s trade negotiator team, and she later served as vice premier and chairperson of the Mainland Affairs Council before becoming president.

As Taiwan’s president, Tsai Ing-wen has focused on strengthening Taiwan’s democracy, economic development, and international relations, particularly with the United States and other democratic nations. She has also taken a strong stance on defending Taiwan's sovereignty in the face of pressure from China, which views Taiwan as part of its territory.
