Trombone Shorty (born Troy Andrews) is an American musician, bandleader, and author hailing from New Orleans, Louisiana. A musical prodigy, he began playing the trombone at age four and was leading his own band by age six. Deeply rooted in the rich jazz and brass band traditions of New Orleans, Trombone Shorty blends funk, hip-hop, jazz, and soul, creating a signature sound that pays homage to his hometown while pushing musical boundaries. He has performed with legends like Lenny Kravitz, U2, and Prince, and leads the popular band Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue.

Beyond his music, Trombone Shorty is also a celebrated children’s book author. His debut picture book, Trombone Shorty, is a semi-autobiographical story that introduces young readers to his upbringing in New Orleans and the power of dreams, determination, and community. The book received a Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor and was named a Caldecott Honor Book, reinforcing his impact not only in music but also in literacy and youth empowerment. Through the Trombone Shorty Foundation, he mentors young musicians and supports arts education in New Orleans.

Among his inspiring quotes, he once said: “I was born to play music… I just didn’t know it at the time.” This statement reflects his lifelong connection to sound and rhythm. Another powerful quote: “New Orleans is my heart. I carry its spirit with me wherever I go.” Through his words and work, Trombone Shorty embodies resilience, creativity, and a deep love for his cultural roots, inspiring both future musicians and young readers alike.
