Tricky
Tricky is a pioneering British musician, producer, and actor who emerged from the trip-hop scene in the 1990s. Born Adrian Nicholas Matthews Thaws in Bristol, England, he gained early attention as a collaborator with the band Massive Attack before launching his groundbreaking solo career. His debut album, Maxinquaye (1995), was a critical success and is now regarded as a cornerstone of the trip-hop genre, known for its dark, layered production and emotionally raw lyrics.
Throughout his life, Tricky has drawn inspiration from his working-class upbringing, personal struggles, and multicultural identity. His music blends hip-hop, dub, rock, and electronica, often challenging conventional genre boundaries. Despite his complex relationship with fame and the music industry, Tricky has remained a prolific and influential figure, producing over a dozen solo albums and collaborating with artists ranging from Björk to Grace Jones.
Tricky is known for his enigmatic persona and thought-provoking remarks. One of his notable quotes is: “Being black and being British is like being invisible.” This reflects his deep engagement with issues of identity and race. Another powerful quote: “I don’t make music for the masses—I make it for myself”, captures his fiercely independent spirit and dedication to authenticity in his art.
