Toni Tennille is an American singer, songwriter, and keyboardist, best known as one-half of the 1970s duo Captain & Tennille alongside her former husband Daryl Dragon. Born on May 8, 1940, in Montgomery, Alabama, Tennille began her musical journey at a young age, studying classical piano and performing with the Auburn Knights during her time at Auburn University. She later moved to California, where she co-wrote the rock musical Mother Earth and performed with the South Coast Repertory Theatre. It was during this period that she met Daryl Dragon, leading to their collaboration and eventual marriage in 1975 .
As Captain & Tennille, the duo achieved significant success in the 1970s with hits like "Love Will Keep Us Together," which earned them a Grammy Award for Record of the Year in 1976. Their music, characterized by Tennille's contralto vocals and Dragon's keyboard skills, resonated with audiences, leading to multiple chart-topping singles and gold and platinum albums. In addition to their musical achievements, the pair hosted a popular television variety show in 1976, further cementing their place in pop culture .
Beyond her work with Dragon, Tennille has had a diverse career in music and entertainment.
