Born near Asheville, North Carolina, Brown was raised a Methodist and later became a Calvinist. He earned a B.A. in philosophy from High Point College and a Bachelor of Sacred Theology from Boston University. After pastoring churches in Massachusetts and Florida, he founded Key Life Network, a ministry dedicated to communicating the radical grace of God to sinners and sufferers. Brown is also the host of the radio program Key Life and the talk show Steve Brown, Etc. on the Salem Radio Network .
