Stephen Moyer is an English actor and director, best known for his role as Bill Compton in the HBO series True Blood. Born Stephen John Emery on October 11, 1969, in Brentwood, Essex, England, he trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA). Moyer's early career included work with the Royal Shakespeare Company, where he performed in productions such as Romeo and Juliet and The Thebans .
Moyer's portrayal of Bill Compton, a 173-year-old vampire, in True Blood garnered him significant acclaim and several awards, including a Saturn Award for Best Actor in Television in 2011 . Beyond television, he has appeared in films like Priest (2011) and Concussion (2015). Moyer also directed and produced the 2018 film The Parting Glass, showcasing his versatility in the entertainment industry.
In his personal life, Moyer has been open about his past struggles with alcoholism, stating, “There's this rush that happens from doing our job, this whirring buzz, and you want to continue that buzz” . He has been sober since 2001 and is an advocate for sobriety and rehabilitation. Moyer married his True Blood co-star Anna Paquin in 2010, and they have twins together .
