Sri Chinmoy was a spiritual leader, philosopher, and meditation teacher born on August 27, 1931, in Shakpura, Bengal (now part of Bangladesh). He moved to the United States in the early 1960s, where he established a spiritual community and began teaching meditation and a path of self-realization. Known for his teachings on inner peace, self-transcendence, and love, Chinmoy emphasized the importance of meditation in achieving a higher state of consciousness. Throughout his life, he authored over 1,600 books, including writings on spirituality, poetry, and philosophy, and composed thousands of songs dedicated to uplifting humanity.
Sri Chinmoy founded the Sri Chinmoy Centre in the 1960s, with centers in over 40 countries, where he shared his philosophy of peace and spiritual growth. He was also a proponent of physical fitness, believing in the integration of physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. His interest in athletics led him to organize the Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run, an international relay aimed at promoting peace. As a teacher, Chinmoy inspired millions with his gentle yet profound guidance, emphasizing the importance of compassion, meditation, and service to others.
One of Sri Chinmoy's well-known quotes is, "Peace begins when we choose to become better people," reflecting his belief that individual inner peace can contribute to global harmony. Another powerful quote is, "We can be in the world, but not of the world," illustrating his philosophy of detachment from worldly distractions while still engaging with life in a meaningful way. Sri Chinmoy's teachings continue to inspire those seeking a path of self-discovery, compassion, and inner peace.
