Dr. V.A. Shiva Ayyadurai is an Indian-American engineer, entrepreneur, and political activist, best known for his controversial claim of inventing email. Born on December 2, 1963, in Bombay (now Mumbai), India, Ayyadurai moved to the United States at the age of seven. He earned four degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), including a Ph.D. in biological engineering. In 1978, at the age of 14, he developed a computer program called "EMAIL," which he later copyrighted in 1982. This program replicated the features of interoffice mail systems, such as inbox, outbox, folders, and attachments .

Ayyadurai's claim to have invented email has been widely disputed by historians and pioneers of early electronic messaging systems. Despite this, he has maintained that his work was the first complete system of electronic mail, distinct from earlier forms of messaging. Over the years, he has been involved in various ventures, including founding EchoMail, a company that developed email management software, and CytoSolve, a platform for systems biology research .

In addition to his technical endeavors, Ayyadurai has been an outspoken political figure. He ran for the U.S. Senate in Massachusetts in 2018 and 2020, and launched a campaign for the 2024 U.S. presidential election. Throughout his political career, he has promoted views on free speech, election integrity, and government transparency. One of his notable quotes is: “In many ways, I just did not fit the mold of a 1970s high-tech innovator. I was not white, I was not working for the military or for a defense contractor, and I must have seemed too young and too naive to stand up for the truth” .
