Sheldon Whitehouse is an American lawyer and politician serving as the junior United States Senator from Rhode Island since 2007. Born on October 20, 1955, in New York City, he graduated from Yale University in 1978 and earned his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1982. Before his Senate tenure, Whitehouse served as the U.S. Attorney for Rhode Island from 1993 to 1998 and as the state's Attorney General from 1999 to 2003. He was elected to the Senate in 2006, defeating Republican incumbent Lincoln Chafee, and has since been reelected in 2012, 2018, and 2024 .
