Dr. Scott Gottlieb (born June 11, 1972) is an American physician, public health expert, and former Commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). He served as the 23rd FDA Commissioner from May 2017 to April 2019, appointed by President Donald Trump. Prior to his FDA tenure, Gottlieb held roles at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and was a venture partner at New Enterprise Associates (NEA). He currently serves as a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) and holds board positions at Pfizer and Illumina During his time at the FDA, Gottlieb was recognized for his proactive approach to public health, including efforts to combat the opioid crisis and regulate e-cigarettes. He also advocated for the development of cell and gene therapies and worked to modernize the FDA's oversight of dietary supplements and cosmetics . After resigning from the FDA, he continued to influence public health policy through his writings and media appearances, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, where he provided guidance on mitigation strategies and vaccine development TIME.
