Sarah Weinman is a Canadian author, journalist, and editor recognized for her expertise in crime writing and true crime history. Born in Ottawa, Ontario in 1977, she studied science and journalism before turning her focus to literature and investigative storytelling. Her work blends meticulous research with compelling narrative, making her one of the most respected voices in contemporary true crime and crime fiction criticism.

As an author, Weinman is best known for The Real Lolita: The Kidnapping of Sally Horner and the Novel That Scandalized the World (2018), which traces the true story behind Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita. She also edited Women Crime Writers: Eight Suspense Novels of the 1940s and 1950s for the Library of America, reviving interest in overlooked female writers. Her more recent work, Scoundrel (2022), explores themes of crime, justice, and deception, cementing her reputation as a leading crime historian.

Reflecting her outlook, Weinman has said: “True crime isn’t about the lurid details—it’s about the society that allows such stories to happen.” She has also remarked: “Writing is a way to recover voices that history tried to silence.” These quotes capture her belief in justice, truth, and storytelling, values that shape both her authorship and her cultural commentary.
