Sam Heughan is a Scottish actor, producer, author, and entrepreneur, best known for his role as Jamie Fraser in the Starz series Outlander. Born on April 30, 1980, in Balmaclellan, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, Heughan's early life was influenced by his parents' involvement in a London-based hippie community inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien's works, which led them to name him after a character from The Lord of the Rings . Heughan attended the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland) in Glasgow, graduating in 2003.
