Robert Lepage is a Canadian playwright, actor, film director, and stage director renowned for his innovative and multidisciplinary approach to theater. Born on December 12, 1957, in Quebec City, he was raised in a bilingual household and developed an early interest in both geography and drama. Lepage studied at the Conservatoire d'art dramatique de Québec from 1975 to 1978 and later participated in workshops in Paris. His first major work, La Trilogie des dragons (1985), catapulted him to international fame. In 1994, he founded Ex Machina, a multidisciplinary production company, where he continues to create and produce original works that blend theater, film, and technology .
Lepage's works often explore themes of identity, memory, and the intersection of cultures. Notable productions include The Seven Streams of the River Ota (1994), The Far Side of the Moon (2000), and 887 (2015). His productions are characterized by their use of multimedia elements and innovative stagecraft. Lepage has also directed operas, including The Damnation of Faust and Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen cycle, and collaborated with Cirque du Soleil on the productions KÀ (2005) and TOTEM (2010) .
In his reflections on the nature of theater and creativity, Lepage has shared several insights. He believes that "a show is good when there is a meeting of time and space, when time and space become irrelevant" . He also emphasizes the importance of embracing chaos in the creative process, stating, "People think that it is negative, but in fact, chaos can be very fertile" . These perspectives underscore his commitment to pushing the boundaries of theatrical expression and his belief in the transformative power of art.
