RM (born Kim Nam-joon on September 12, 1994) is a globally acclaimed South Korean rapper, songwriter, and authorial voice, best known as the leader of the world-renowned music group BTS. Born in Ilsan, South Korea, RM was known early on for his academic brilliance and love of language, which led him to writing poetry before transitioning into lyrics and hip-hop. He became a trainee under Big Hit Entertainment at the age of 16 and later debuted with BTS in 2013, where his articulate lyricism and intellectual depth quickly distinguished him as one of the most thoughtful voices in modern music.
As an author, RM expresses himself powerfully through his lyrics, essays, and public speeches. He has contributed to the writing and production of the majority of BTS's discography, blending themes of self-identity, mental health, love, and youth. In addition to BTS albums, he has released solo projects like RM (2015) and Indigo (2022), which further showcase his philosophical depth and literary sensibilities. RM’s ability to combine personal vulnerability with social commentary has earned him praise not only as a musician but also as a modern poetic storyteller.
RM is known for his deeply introspective and inspirational quotes. One of his most famous lines comes from a UN speech: “No matter who you are, where you’re from, your skin color, your gender identity: speak yourself.” On creativity, he’s said: “I’m standing at the edge of a cliff. I’m afraid but if I keep trembling in fear, I’ll never be able to take that next step.” He also reflects: “If you want to love others, I think you should love yourself first.” These quotes embody RM’s core message of self-awareness, empowerment, and authenticity—making him a powerful authorial force for his generation and beyond.
