Raheem DeVaughn is an American R&B and neo-soul singer-songwriter, acclaimed for his soulful voice and heartfelt ballads. Born on May 5, 1975, in Newark, New Jersey, he was raised in Maryland and is the son of jazz cellist Abdul Wadud. DeVaughn began his musical journey in church and local talent shows before dropping out of Coppin State University to pursue a career in music. He gained early exposure through collaborations with DJ Jazzy Jeff and others, leading to a record deal with Jive Records in 2002 .
