Rachel Riley is a British television presenter and mathematician, best known for her role as the resident numbers expert on the Channel 4 quiz show Countdown. Born on January 11, 1986, in Rochford, Essex, Riley demonstrated academic excellence from an early age, achieving four A grades at A-Level and later earning a degree in mathematics from Oriel College, Oxford. Before transitioning to television, she briefly worked as a data analyst at a price comparison website. Her breakthrough came in 2009 when, at just 22 years old, she joined Countdown, replacing Carol Vorderman and quickly becoming a beloved figure on British television .
Beyond her work on Countdown, Riley has co-presented the comedy panel show 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown and appeared on various other programs, including The Gadget Show and It's Not Rocket Science. She has also showcased her dancing skills as a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing in 2013. Fluent in several languages, including Russian, Riley is passionate about promoting STEM education and has been involved in initiatives to encourage young people, especially girls, to engage with mathematics and science .
Riley is also known for her outspoken advocacy on social issues. In 2023, she was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for her services to Holocaust education and antisemitism awareness.
