Pervez Musharraf

Pervez Musharraf (born 1943) is a Pakistani military officer and politician who served as the 10th President of Pakistan from 2001 to 2008. Born in Delhi, India, Musharraf moved to Pakistan after the partition in 1947 and later joined the Pakistan Military Academy. He rose through the ranks of the Pakistan Army and became its chief in 1998. In 1999, he led a military coup that ousted the elected government of Nawaz Sharif, assuming power as chief executive before becoming president. His leadership was marked by efforts to align Pakistan more closely with the United States in the war on terror, especially after the events of 9/11.

Musharraf's presidency saw significant political and economic reforms, but his tenure was also marred by controversies, including his dismissal of the supreme court and his decision to impose martial law in 2007. Despite facing opposition, Musharraf remained a strong figure on the international stage, advocating for Pakistan’s interests in both military and diplomatic matters. After resigning from the presidency in 2008, he went into self-imposed exile but returned to Pakistan in 2013 to contest elections, although his political comeback was short-lived.
