Paul Twitchell
Paul Twitchell
Paul Twitchell was an American spiritual teacher, author, and the founder of the modern-day religious movement known as Eckankar. Born in 1908, he began his spiritual quest early in life, exploring a range of mystical and philosophical traditions. In the 1960s, he introduced Eckankar to the public, presenting it as the "Path of Spiritual Freedom" that emphasizes personal experiences with the Light and Sound of God. Through his teachings and writings, Twitchell aimed to guide individuals on their inward journey toward self-realization and divine understanding.
As a prolific writer, Paul Twitchell authored numerous books and discourses that outlined the principles of Soul Travel, spiritual liberation, and the role of the Mahanta, or Inner Master. His most well-known works include The Tiger’s Fang and Stranger by the River. A signature quote that reflects his teachings is: “The only way to find truth is to go within yourself.” His writings encouraged seekers to trust their inner experiences and personal connection with the Divine over dogma or external authority.
Twitchell’s philosophy combined elements of Eastern mysticism with a Western approach to individualism and self-exploration. He often spoke about the eternal nature of the Soul, saying, “You are Soul. You exist because God loves you.” His legacy continues through the Eckankar movement, which remains active worldwide, helping people seek spiritual growth and understanding through direct personal experience.
