Nafessa Williams (born December 4, 1989, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is a distinguished American actress and occasional author of her own story and advocacy. Raised in West Philadelphia, she studied criminal justice at West Chester University and initially interned in the homicide unit of the Philadelphia District Attorney's office. Disillusioned with her legal career, she pivoted to acting following an audition that changed her life – a decision she later described as “the best thing that happened to me” Teen Vogue+15+1526 Magazine+15.

On screen, Williams earned wide recognition as Anissa Pierce / Thunder in Black Lightning (2018–2021), becoming television’s first Black lesbian superhero and a powerful symbol of representation BrainyQuote+6+6Teen Vogue+6.
