Mike Hughes
Mike Hughes
Mike Hughes was an American daredevil, rocket builder, and self-taught scientist, best known for his attempts to launch himself into space in homemade rockets. Born in 1956, Hughes gained widespread attention for his "mad scientist" persona and his quest to prove that the Earth was flat, despite overwhelming scientific evidence to the contrary. In 2018, he launched himself in a homemade rocket, reaching an altitude of approximately 1,875 feet, an effort that was both an engineering feat and a testament to his adventurous spirit.
Hughes was not only interested in rocket science, but also had a passion for aerial stunts and aviation, which led him to hold multiple world records in limousine jumps and other extreme feats. His work was largely self-funded, with Hughes using his own resources to create and test his rockets. Though his beliefs about the flat Earth drew skepticism, his boldness and unconventional approach to science attracted a certain following, and he became a subject of both fascination and controversy.
In one of his most memorable quotes, Hughes said, "I don't believe in science. I believe in testing." This statement reflected his unorthodox approach to science and his deep belief in hands-on experimentation. Despite his tragic death in 2020, when one of his rockets malfunctioned, Mike Hughes remains remembered for his daring spirit, relentless pursuit of his dreams, and the controversial way he chose to challenge the boundaries of science and human curiosity.
