Menachem Begin
Menachem Begin was a prominent Israeli politician, statesman, and author, born in 1913 in what is now Belarus. He was a key figure in the establishment of the State of Israel and served as its sixth Prime Minister from 1977 to 1983. Begin was the leader of the Likud party and is remembered for his dedication to Israeli security and peace efforts, notably signing the historic Israel-Egypt Peace Treaty in 1979.
Before his political career, Begin was a leader of the Irgun, a Jewish paramilitary organization during the British Mandate of Palestine. His leadership during turbulent times helped shape Israel’s path to independence. Beyond politics, Begin was also an author, writing memoirs and reflections on Zionism, leadership, and faith. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1978 alongside Egyptian President Anwar Sadat for their peace efforts.
Among Menachem Begin’s memorable quotes is, "Peace is the beauty of life. It is sunshine. It is the smile of a child, the love of a mother, the joy of a father, the togetherness of a family," reflecting his deep yearning for peace. He also said, "The sword shall not depart from your house, because you did not know the time of your visitation," illustrating his complex understanding of security and vigilance. Begin’s legacy endures as a leader committed to both peace and the survival of his nation.
