Matt Gaetz is an American lawyer and politician who served as the U.S. Representative for Florida's 1st congressional district from 2017 to 2024. Born on May 7, 1982, in Hollywood, Florida, Gaetz is the son of Don Gaetz, a former Florida State Senator and Senate President. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Florida State University in 2003 and a Juris Doctor from the College of William & Mary in 2007 . Gaetz is known for his staunch support of former President Donald Trump and his ultraconservative positions on various issues.

During his tenure in Congress, Gaetz was a vocal advocate for limited government, Second Amendment rights, and deregulation. He gained national attention for his role in the ousting of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in 2023 and was a prominent figure in the House Freedom Caucus. Gaetz also served on the Judiciary and Armed Services Committees, where he focused on issues such as immigration reform and government accountability .

In November 2024, President-elect Donald Trump nominated Gaetz to serve as Attorney General. However, Gaetz withdrew his nomination later that month amid ongoing investigations into allegations of sexual misconduct and obstruction of justice. He resigned from Congress on November 13, 2024, and did not return to his seat after the 2024 election .
