Matt Blunt
Matt Blunt is an American politician, lobbyist, and former naval officer who served as the 54th Governor of Missouri from 2005 to 2009. Born on November 20, 1970, in Greene County, Missouri, Blunt is the son of Roy Blunt, a longtime U.S. senator. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1993 and served as a Surface Warfare Officer in the U.S. Navy, participating in operations such as Operation Uphold Democracy in Haiti and Operation Enduring Freedom in southern England. After his military service, Blunt entered politics, serving in the Missouri House of Representatives, as Missouri Secretary of State, and ultimately as governor.
As governor, Blunt focused on fiscal responsibility, education reform, and economic development. He erased a $1.1 billion budget deficit, enacted tax cuts, and increased education funding by $1.2 billion. Blunt also promoted Missouri as a potential hub for bioscience, though his administration faced criticism for limiting funding for stem cell research. After choosing not to seek re-election in 2008, Blunt transitioned to a career as a political consultant in Washington, D.C., and later became the president of the American Automotive Policy Council in 2011.
Blunt's leadership and principles are reflected in his quotes, such as: “The spirit and determination of the people to chart their own destiny is the greatest power for good in human affairs.” Another notable quote is: “Public education is an investment in our future.” These statements highlight his commitment to empowering individuals and investing in the future of Missouri.
