Marco van Basten
Marco van Basten is a retired Dutch footballer and manager, widely regarded as one of the greatest strikers in the history of the sport. Born on October 31, 1964, in Utrecht, Netherlands, he began his professional career at Ajax before moving to AC Milan, where he achieved significant success. Van Basten won three Ballon d'Or awards (1988, 1989, 1992) and the FIFA World Player of the Year in 1992. He was also instrumental in the Netherlands' victory at the UEFA Euro 1988, scoring five goals, including a memorable volley in the final against the Soviet Union .
Known for his exceptional technical skills, vision, and finishing ability, van Basten was dubbed the "Swan of Utrecht" for his elegance on the field. His career was unfortunately cut short due to chronic ankle injuries, leading to his retirement in 1995 at the age of 28 . Despite his early retirement, he remains a prominent figure in football, having served as a coach for the Netherlands national team and various club teams, including Ajax and Heerenveen .
One of van Basten's notable quotes is: "There was a moment in 1996 I had to say: 'I have to try to get healthy.' We made a decision to fuse my ankle. For a sportsman, and I was still only 32, that's the worst choice. But I had to stop the pain" . This reflects his resilience and dedication to the sport, even in the face of personal challenges. Another of his reflections is: "I think the person I learnt the most from as a coach was Cruyff because he was always talking about tactics - how to play, where to play and when to play" , highlighting the profound influence of Johan Cruyff on his approach to football.
