Malachi Kirby is a British actor and writer born on September 20, 1989, in London, England. Raised in the Patmore Estate in Battersea, he discovered his passion for acting at the age of 14 through a course at the Battersea Arts Centre. He further honed his craft at the Identity School of Acting and later studied at Richmond upon Thames College. Kirby gained prominence for his portrayal of Kunta Kinte in the 2016 remake of Roots, a role that deeply resonated with him, stating, "It had a profound effect on me. In 2020, Kirby earned a BAFTA Award for his performance as Darcus Howe in Steve McQueen's Small Axe: Mangrove, which highlighted the 1970s British civil rights movement.
