Magdi Yacoub is an Egyptian-British cardiothoracic surgeon and one of the world’s most respected pioneers in heart surgery. Born in Belbeis, Egypt in 1935, he studied medicine at Cairo University before moving to the United Kingdom, where he specialized in cardiothoracic surgery. Yacoub became renowned for his groundbreaking work in heart and lung transplantation, as well as for developing innovative surgical techniques that have saved countless lives.
Throughout his career, Yacoub served as Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Imperial College London and led surgical teams at Harefield Hospital and Royal Brompton Hospital. He performed more than 2,000 transplants and was instrumental in advancing pediatric cardiac surgery. In addition to his clinical work, he founded the Magdi Yacoub Heart Foundation to provide free cardiac care in Egypt and train the next generation of surgeons.
Reflecting his philosophy on medicine and life, Magdi Yacoub has said, "My mission is to serve people, not to seek glory." He has also remarked, "If you stop learning, you stop living."
