Layla Moran is a British author, politician, and educator known for her advocacy in education and progressive politics. Born in Hammersmith, London in 1982, she has Palestinian and British heritage, which has shaped her perspective on identity and international issues. Before entering politics, she worked as a maths and physics teacher, bringing her passion for education and young people into her later career as the Liberal Democrat MP for Oxford West and Abingdon since 2017.

As an author, Moran has written about her personal journey and her experiences navigating both politics and identity. Her memoir Bright Lights and Burning Issues reflects on her life as a teacher turned politician, as well as her historic role as the first openly pansexual Member of Parliament in the UK. Her writing highlights themes of diversity, inclusion, and civic responsibility, providing inspiration for those who value openness and authenticity in leadership.

Reflecting her outlook, Moran has said: “Politics should be about bringing people together, not driving them apart.” She has also remarked: “When you live your truth openly, you give others the courage to do the same.” These quotes capture her belief in authenticity, unity, and representation, values that shape both her political work and her authorship.
