Lawrence Lessig is an American legal scholar, professor, and political activist, born on June 3, 1961, in the United States. He is the Roy L. Furman Professor of Law and Leadership at Harvard Law School and the former director of the Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics at Harvard University. Lessig began his academic career at the University of Chicago Law School, where he helped the newly-independent Republic of Georgia draft a constitution. He later taught at Stanford Law School, where he founded the Center for Internet and Society, before returning to Harvard .
Lessig is best known for his work in the fields of intellectual property, cyberlaw, and political reform. He is the founder of Creative Commons, a nonprofit organization that enables the free distribution of creative works, and Equal Citizens, an organization dedicated to electoral reform. In 2016, he briefly ran for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States, focusing on campaign finance reform and the Citizen Equality Act .
