Lance Armstrong
Lance Armstrong (born September 18, 1971 in Plano, Texas, USA) is a former professional road racing cyclist best known for winning the Tour de France seven consecutive times from 1999 to 2005. A talented triathlete in his youth, he transitioned to cycling and rose quickly through the ranks. In 1996, he was diagnosed with advanced testicular cancer, which had spread to his lungs and brain. After a miraculous recovery, he made a historic comeback to dominate world cycling, inspiring millions through his resilience and the founding of the Livestrong Foundation, which raised hundreds of millions for cancer support and research.
However, Armstrong’s legacy became deeply controversial when he admitted in 2013 to using performance-enhancing drugs throughout his career, after years of denial. Stripped of his Tour de France titles and banned from professional cycling for life, his story became one of both triumph and downfall. Despite the scandal, he has continued to reflect publicly on his journey, hosting a podcast, participating in endurance events, and engaging in entrepreneurial ventures and discussions about redemption.
Throughout his life, Lance Armstrong has offered many impactful quotes. On determination, he once said: “Pain is temporary. It may last a minute, or an hour… but it will subside. If I quit, however, it lasts forever.” Reflecting on resilience, he declared: “Anything is possible. You can be told that you have a 90 percent chance or a 50 percent chance or a 1 percent chance, but you have to believe, and you have to fight.” And on learning from mistakes: “The truth isn’t what I said, the truth is what I lived.” These words capture his fierce willpower, personal complexity, and enduring belief in perseverance.
