Kirsten Sweetland is a retired Canadian professional triathlete renowned for her resilience and achievements in the sport. Born on September 24, 1988, in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Sweetland began competing in triathlons at the age of 10. She made history in 2006 by becoming the first Canadian woman to win the ITU Junior World Championship. Her career highlights include a silver medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and a bronze at the ITU World Triathlon Series event in Hamburg. Despite facing multiple injuries and health challenges, Sweetland represented Canada at the 2016 Rio Olympics, finishing 41st in the women's triathlon event .
Beyond her athletic accomplishments, Sweetland has been open about her health struggles, including being diagnosed with late-stage Lyme disease in 2016. She shared her journey on social media, stating, "We now know that I have late-stage Lyme disease. I'm so proud to have made it this far under such circumstances and couldn't have done so without the amazing doctors I was able to work with" .
