Kathleen Hanna
Kathleen Hanna is a pioneering American musician, feminist activist, and author, best known as the frontwoman of the punk band Bikini Kill and a founding voice of the Riot Grrrl movement. Born in 1968 in Portland, Oregon, she became a central figure in 1990s underground feminism, using her music and zines to challenge misogyny, sexual violence, and gender inequality. Through her confrontational lyrics and powerful stage presence, Hanna redefined what it meant to be a woman in punk rock.
In addition to Bikini Kill, Kathleen Hanna formed the electro-punk group Le Tigre and later the band The Julie Ruin, continuously blending activism with art. She has also authored essays and spoken publicly about feminism, health struggles, and her experience with Lyme disease, becoming an outspoken advocate for women’s health and empowerment. Her work has inspired generations of feminists, musicians, and cultural critics across the globe.
Among her most iconic quotes, Hanna once said: “I believe in the radical possibilities of pleasure, babe.” Another bold statement of hers is: “We’re not going to ask permission—we’re going to do it ourselves.” These quotes encapsulate her fearless spirit and unrelenting commitment to self-expression, resistance, and feminist rebellion, making her a lasting icon in both music and social justice literature.
