Dr. Kallam Anji Reddy was a pioneering Indian pharmaceutical entrepreneur, best known as the founder of Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, a global leader in the pharmaceutical industry. Born on August 10, 1941, in Tadepalli, Andhra Pradesh, Reddy's early exposure to his father's practice of distributing herbal medicine for free inspired his lifelong mission to make healthcare accessible. He earned his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the National Chemical Laboratory, Pune, and began his career at Indian Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Ltd (IDPL) before venturing into private enterprise. In 1984, he established Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories with the vision of providing affordable, high-quality medicines to the masses .

Under Reddy's leadership, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories became a trailblazer in the Indian pharmaceutical sector, focusing on reverse engineering patented drugs to produce generic versions at lower costs. This approach not only made essential medications more affordable but also positioned India as a significant player in the global pharmaceutical market. Reddy's commitment to innovation and quality earned him the prestigious Padma Shri in 2001 and the Padma Bhushan in 2011, two of India's highest civilian honors .

Reddy's philosophy extended beyond business; he believed in the power of purpose-driven work. One of his notable quotes is, "Everyone has a purpose in life and a unique talent to give to others. And when we blend this unique talent with service to others, we experience the ecstasy and exultation of our own spirit, which is the ultimate goal of all goals." He also emphasized the importance of societal good, stating, "We must show there is good in society. If you read the newspapers, you think there are only crooks in this world, but that's not true." These insights reflect his belief in the intersection of personal fulfillment and social contribution.
