Jordi Cuixart
Jordi Cuixart is a Catalan author, entrepreneur, and activist best known for his leadership in the Catalan independence movement. Born in Santa Perpètua de Mogoda, Spain in 1975, he built a successful career as a businessman before becoming president of Òmnium Cultural, one of Catalonia’s most influential cultural organizations. His activism led to his imprisonment following the 2017 Catalan independence referendum, making him a symbol of peaceful resistance and freedom of expression.
As an author, Cuixart has written works that combine personal reflection, political thought, and cultural identity. His book Ho tornarem a fer (“We Will Do It Again”) is both a manifesto and a memoir, where he reflects on civil disobedience, democracy, and the fight for self-determination. His writing highlights his belief in nonviolence, human rights, and the preservation of Catalan culture as essential to building a just society.
Reflecting his philosophy, Cuixart has said: “To defend rights and freedoms is not a crime—it is a duty.” He has also remarked: “We will do it again, because democracy cannot be imprisoned.” These quotes embody his commitment to freedom, democracy, and resilience, principles that guide both his activism and his authorship.
