John Paul Densmore (born December 1, 1944) is an acclaimed American musician, songwriter, author, and actor, best known as the drummer for the legendary rock band The Doors. As a founding member of the group in 1965, he helped shape their unique sound, drawing on influences from jazz, world music, and rock and roll. His groundbreaking work with The Doors earned him induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as well as a Grammy Award for lifetime achievement .

Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, Densmore began his musical journey playing piano before switching to drums and percussion in his school marching band and orchestra. He attended Santa Monica City College and California State University, Northridge, where he studied ethnic music under jazz cellist Fred Katz. Beyond his performing career, Densmore is the author of the bestselling memoir Riders on the Storm: My Life with Jim Morrison and The Doors, and has penned additional works exploring both his bandmates and other notable figures Goodreads.
