Joey Santiago is a Filipino-American musician and guitarist, best known for his role as a founding member of the influential alternative rock band Pixies. Born on June 10, 1965, in Manila, Philippines, Joey moved to the United States as a child and later attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he met future bandmates Black Francis and David Lovering. As the band's lead guitarist, Santiago played a key role in crafting the distinct, edgy sound that defined the Pixies, blending surf rock, punk, and noise pop. His innovative guitar work helped shape the band’s unique musical identity, making them pioneers of the alternative rock movement.

Joey Santiago’s contributions to Pixies can be heard in some of their most iconic songs, including "Where Is My Mind?" and "Debaser." After the band’s initial breakup in the early 1990s, he continued to work in the music industry, contributing to various projects and collaborations. In 2004, Pixies reunited, and Joey's guitar playing once again became central to the band's live performances and subsequent albums, solidifying his place in rock history. His distinct guitar style, marked by disruptive melodies and intricate riffs, continues to inspire a generation of musicians.

Reflecting on his approach to music, Joey Santiago once said, "I don’t think I’ve ever been fully comfortable with a sound or a technique. I’m always pushing myself to try something new, to keep evolving." He also noted, "Guitar playing is about expression. You have to find your own voice, your own tone, and that’s something that can take years to discover." These quotes highlight his commitment to innovation and his belief in the constant pursuit of musical evolution, which has been a defining characteristic of both his career and the Pixies’ legacy.
