Ibrahim Rugova

Ibrahim Rugova was a Kosovar intellectual, politician, and author who became the leading figure of the non-violent resistance movement in Kosovo during the 1990s. Born in Cerrcë, Kosovo in 1944, he studied literature and philosophy in Pristina and Paris, later becoming a professor and literary critic. As the first President of Kosovo (1992–2006, in a provisional capacity before independence), Rugova earned the nickname “the Gandhi of the Balkans” for advocating peaceful resistance against Serbian rule.

As an author and literary scholar, Rugova published essays and critical works on Albanian literature, symbolism, and cultural identity.
