George Ayittey

George Ayittey was a Ghanaian economist, author, and advocate for economic freedom and democratic reform in Africa. Born on October 13, 1945, in Tarkwa, Ghana, Ayittey earned his B.Sc. in Economics from the University of Ghana, an M.A. from the University of Western Ontario, and a Ph.D. from the University of Manitoba. He served as a Distinguished Economist in Residence at American University in Washington, D.C., and founded the Free Africa Foundation in 1993 to promote economic reforms across the continent. Ayittey was recognized as one of Foreign Policy’s “Top 100 Public Intellectuals” in 2008 .

Ayittey's work challenged prevailing narratives about Africa's economic challenges. He argued that Africa's poverty stemmed not from colonialism but from corrupt leadership and centralized, socialist policies. In his seminal book Africa Betrayed (1992), he contended that dictators and authoritarian regimes were the primary obstacles to Africa's development. He also emphasized the importance of indigenous African institutions and free markets as foundations for sustainable growth .

One of Ayittey's most notable quotes is: "Africa is poor because she is not free." This reflects his belief that political freedom and economic liberty are essential for the continent's prosperity. Another significant quote is: "The solutions to Africa's problems lie in Africa, not in Live Aid concerts." Ayittey was a vocal critic of foreign aid, arguing that it often perpetuated dependency and failed to address the root causes of Africa's challenges .
