Francis I (1708–1765) was the Holy Roman Emperor from 1745 until his death, as well as the Grand Duke of Tuscany and Archduke of Austria. Born Francis Stephen of Lorraine in Nancy, he married Maria Theresa in 1736, forming the Habsburg-Lorraine dynasty. Although Maria Theresa wielded significant political power, Francis I managed the empire's finances and was known for his interest in natural sciences and alchemy .
