Born on November 9, 1972, in San Francisco, California, Dane began his acting career in the 1990s with appearances in shows like Saved by the Bell and Roseanne. His breakout role came in 2006 when he was cast as Dr. Mark "McSteamy" Sloan on the ABC medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, a role he portrayed until 2012 and briefly returned to in 2021. Following this, he starred as Captain Tom Chandler in the TNT series The Last Ship and as Cal Jacobs in HBO’s Euphoria .
In April 2025, Dane publicly announced that he had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurodegenerative disease.
