Emmanuel Jal (born January 1, 1980) is a South Sudanese-Canadian artist, author, and activist whose life journey from a child soldier to a global advocate for peace and education has inspired millions. Born in Tonj, South Sudan, Jal was recruited as a child soldier during the Second Sudanese Civil War. At the age of 11, he escaped captivity with the help of British aid worker Emma McCune, who later adopted him and smuggled him into Kenya. Jal's music blends hip-hop and Afro-pop, delivering messages of peace, reconciliation, and social justice.
