Edmond François Valentin About was a prominent French novelist, journalist, and publicist born on February 14, 1828, in Dieuze, France. A graduate of the École Normale Supérieure, he spent two years in Greece as a member of the École française d'Athènes, which inspired his first major work, La Grèce contemporaine (1855). Known for his sharp wit and satirical style, About became a member of the Académie française in 1884 .
His literary repertoire includes both serious novels and humorous works. Notable among his serious novels are Le Roman d'un brave homme (1880) and L'Infâme (1867).
