Dutee Chand is a distinguished Indian sprinter, born on February 3, 1996, in Chaka Gopalpur, Jajpur, Odisha. Hailing from a modest weaving family, she was the third of seven children. Inspired by her elder sister, a state-level athlete, Dutee embarked on her athletic journey at the age of four. By 2006, she joined a government sports hostel in Bhubaneswar, marking the beginning of her professional training. She later pursued a law degree at KIIT University and currently serves as an executive officer at the Odisha Mining Corporation Ltd.
Dutee's athletic prowess is evident in her remarkable achievements. In 2018, she clinched silver medals in both the 100m and 200m events at the Asian Games, marking India's first medals in these disciplines since 1998. Her victory at the 2019 Summer Universiade in Naples made her the first Indian woman to win a gold in the 100m event at the competition. Additionally, she holds the national record in the 100m sprint with a time of 11.17 seconds, set in 2021.
Beyond her athletic accomplishments, Dutee is a trailblazer for LGBTQ+ rights in India. In 2019, she became the country's first openly gay athlete, publicly acknowledging her same-sex relationship.
